Portraits
Select one studio portrait and answer:
Lighting: 1 pt
Describe the lighting in the shot. Where is the light coming from? How is it falling on the models face/head/body?Describe the shadows that are created in the photo.
The top right photo's lighting casts shadows on Pach's face, while the other half of his face is illuminated, as the lighting is cast on only the right half of his face.
Position of the Model: 1 pt
How is the model situated? Is the photo a head shot, or did you include more of the torso? Is the model facing the camera, looking to the side, tilting their head…
In the bottom right photo, Sam is positioned straight at me, like a mug shot, and I was fairly close to him.
Position of the Camera/Composition: 2 pts
Did you take a horizontal or vertical photo? What was your point of view? Did you shoot from above, below, from the side or on an angle? How close or far were you from the model?
All of the photos were taken horizontally, but I will be talking about the bottom middle photo. I took the photo from Sam's left at an even angle, but I made sure to take the photo at a far distance to show the movement in the photo.
Impact/Expression: 1 pt
What does the lighting, position of model and expression on face communicate? What aspect of the model’s personality is being revealed in the portrait? (serious, humorous, sad, anxious…)
In the bottom left photo, Sam is laughing, communicating his heightened sense of humor.
Compare and contrast: 3 pts
Compare the photo to another with a different impact/viewer response. How did you use different lighting, positioning or expression to communicate a different feeling?
Comparing the top left photo with the top middle photo, the subject is the same, but Coby's expression is different in each, as he is taking a photo in one, while he is pretending to drive in another. Both photos are composed similarly, as each is taken relatively head-on, straight angle.
